THE WEBINAR “ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF UNIVERSITY OMBUDSMEN IN LATIN AMERICA AND EUROPE” WAS A SUCCESSFUL CONDUCT
On June 4, the webinar “Role and importance of universities in Latin America and Europe” of the Erasmus+ Bravioo project, Governance, peace, security and human development, was held, with the participation of Josef Leidenfrost, from the European Network of University Ombudsmen; Claudia Bustillo, University Commissioner of the National Autonomous University of Honduras; Griselda Sillerico, former University Ombudsman of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés; Jorge Ribeiro Pereira, Member of the Board of Directors of the European Network of University Ombudsmen, acted as moderator.
On this occasion, participants shared their experiences with university ombudsmen in their countries, commenting on the importance of having an entity that ensures respect for the rights of those who are part of the university community and resolves conflicts between students and other university bodies, having the executive capacity to use its moral authority to solve conflicts, generate good practices, facilitate consensus, restore violated rights or make proposals that contribute to better functioning of universities.
In some universities it is called the Student Welfare Department or another name and works, according to participants, using mediation as a strategy to resolve conflicts between people. In the webinar, the characteristics of the university ombudsman were discussed as a person who can make proposals to improve the quality of their university, governed by the principle of justice, ensuring respect for the rights contemplated by university regulations and also recognizing the obligations that these have in the course of their university life.
